An interesting video from National Geographic. This year the world population reaches the magic number of 7 billion. National Geographic tried to help readers “visualise” the immensity of that figure by putting it into a demographic, geographic and historical perspective. Here goes:

Excellent video this one. Especially liked the typography.
Interesting. It’s in fact impossible to visualize such a huge number. Considering what was mentioned, that shoulder to shoulder all 7 billion of us would cover just the area of Los Angeles, we’re still far from being packed like those sardines in the picture. But… Isaac Asimov once remarked that, at the present rate of population growth, if unchecked and with unlimited food resources, in 6000 years the mass of humanity would be equivalent to the entire mass of the universe. Which goes to show – we either control population growth, or billions are going to perish due to lack of resources.
