Athlete's Booth

cyprus

The Partit Laburista has called for the Maltese Electoral Commission to charter a plane to Cyprus in order to give the Maltese contingent to the (European) Small Nations Games  the chance to vote. Essentially what the PL is requesting is that a whole plane is chartered so that not just the ballot box but also all the scrutinisors and representatives of major parties can be present when the athlete’s place their votes.

This is another step in the long-running charade that has as its main protagonists the two main parties in Malta – the PN  (Nationalists) and the PL (Labour). In a country where every vote counts the scramble to ensure that every vote is cast is important. One of the worst kept secrets in Malta is the fact that both big parties keep databases about citizens and their voting allegiance (or tendency) in direct violation of privacy laws.

The Nationalist Party, always eager to appear the stalwart defender of democracy, has suggested altering the law in order to allow the athletic contingent to vote earlier. This would not be the first time that one of the two main parties tampers with voting laws in order to accomodate its short term aims. Labour seems to have abandoned its original support for this particular solution.

No mention has been made of the large contingent of Maltese based in Luxembourg, Brussels, Strasbourg and Frankfurt institutions. The Nationalist party only went so far as using this contingent in order to criticise the Labour “charter plane” solution by stating that this would be discriminatory against other voters living abroad.

Both parties have recently abandoned (or relaxed) their very democratic practise of applying electoral laws to the letter and challenging the right to vote of anyone who has not spent a substantial amount of the year preceding the election on the island. Their inability to agree on a viable solution for voters working abroad lies partly in Labour’s conviction that the majority of these expats would vote Nationalist.

A simple solution like a ballot booth at the Brussels Representation does not seem to be considered. Internet voting, as any reader could imagine, is still light years away. So long as PLPN can continue their tango!

A Time for Revelrie

carnival2

Carnival approaches and with it the time of gay abandon and sweet revelrie afore the fervent believers among us take up the fasting that is necessary during the time of Lent. Etymologyical geeks can really feast on this period that give us such lovely words as “lent” itself which derives from the Germanic word “long” because it is during this period that days become longer again.

Fasting – or going without food – also gave us the word “breakfast” (or déjeuner in French) both of which refer to the fact that upon waking we break (or end) and involuntary fast (Latin jejunare – to fast). The word Carnival itself is subject to numerous etymological theories one of which claims that the word derives from the Italian “carne vale” as in “meat is allowed” before lent.

Malta has long had its own carnival tradition and special village carnivals like the one in Nadur bring out the full extent of the idea of “blugha and zebliegh” two terms I hesitate to translate. This year the time to revel comes in a period of lean and might very well be a good excuse for people to let their hair down and forget their worries. Unfortunately the neutered version of carnival, replete with May Day style floats and orphan of political satyre thanks to the twisted sensitivities of whoever makes the rules might not be the final solution.

J’accuse might be off to Maastricht and Aachen to discover a taster of Carnival elsewhere this coming weekend. We read that the Maltese public will be enjoying a ludic version of the notte bianca for carnival night. Good for them… another reason to rock Valletta alive down to its foundations … FAA permitting of course.

Finally, if you were evering wondering why you should remember what the capital of Equatorial Guinea is, now is the time to savour your knowledge and show off. Malabo is under siege by seaborne gunmen. Even countries have their 15 minutes of fame these days… pity that it should be under such circumstances.
